Used Louis Vuitton: what to look for before buying

Louis Vuitton is the brand we see most in-store, and it's also the one with the most recognizable wear rules. Knowing how materials age helps avoid mistaking a normal characteristic for a defect, and vice versa.

Vachetta is the main variable

On Monogram and Damier Azur, the handles, trims, and tabs are made of vachetta: untreated natural leather, light-colored when the bag is new. With use and light, it darkens, transitioning from beige to honey to a warm brown.

This is not damage; it's the expected behavior of the material. Many people specifically look for a darker patina. What's important to check, however, is whether the vachetta is uniform: localized dark spots, water stains, or black marks on the handles are different from patina because they cannot be removed.

There's a strict rule for care products: those for canvas and leather should not be used on vachetta. They will ruin it instead of cleaning it.

Canvases hold up, corners don't

The Monogram and Damier coated canvas is robust and withstands daily use well. The weak point is never the canvas itself, but the corners: this is where the bag rests, and where the coating wears out first, exposing the fabric underneath.

Check all four bottom corners in close-up photos. A slightly polished corner is normal on a used item; an open corner means a repair needs to be considered.
