How to care for a leather and canvas bag without damaging it
Most of the damage we see in the shop doesn't come from use. It comes from the wrong product being applied with the best intentions.
The most important rule of all
Never apply the product directly to the bag. It should be put on a microfiber cloth and then applied from there, using light circular motions. Spraying or pouring liquid onto the leather creates rings where the liquid concentrates, and these rings are harder to remove than the initial dirt.
Second rule: always test on a hidden spot before working on a visible area.
What to use, based on the material
Coated canvas
A canvas cleaning foam removes stains and dirt without damaging the coating. Shake the bottle, spray onto the cloth, and wipe the canvas. This works well on monogrammed canvases and technical fabrics.
Smooth leather and fine leathers
For surface dirt, a delicate gel cream is needed, which cleans without harming the finish. For nourishment, a moisturizing lotion maintains softness and limits cracking on leathers that tend to dry out.
Frequent treatments are not necessary: two or three times a year on a regularly used bag is sufficient. Over-nourishing weighs down the leather.
Vachetta is the exception
Vachetta parts, meaning the light natural leather of the handles and trims on many Louis Vuitton bags, should not be treated with canvas and leather products. It is an unfinished leather: it absorbs everything, and what it absorbs stays. A cleaner applied to it will leave a permanent stain.
On vachetta, the only sensible maintenance is preventive: clean hands, no freshly applied creams or perfumes, and be careful with water.
How to store a bag you're not using
Three things make almost all the difference.
Fill it. Tissue paper or a soft cushion maintains its shape and prevents permanent creases on the sides. Do not use newspapers: the ink transfers.
Keep it in its dust bag, not in a sealed box. Cotton allows it to breathe, plastic traps moisture and promotes mold.
Away from direct light. Sun darkens vachetta unevenly and fades colored leathers. A dry, airy closet is sufficient.
If the bag remains unused for a long time, take it out occasionally and let it air for a few hours: it's the simplest way to avoid a musty smell.
When to stop
There are situations where persistence worsens the result: ink or makeup stains that have penetrated the lining, color transferred from jeans onto light leather, mold, failed stitching, open corners. These require specialized workshop intervention, not just a cloth and product.
