Used Chanel: What determines the price in the secondary market
Chanel is the brand we receive the most questions about and the one with the widest price differences between pieces that at first glance seem identical. There are only a few elements that explain these differences.
Leather changes everything
The two historic leathers behave in opposite ways. Lambskin is smooth and soft: it is the most elegant and the most delicate. It scratches easily, and the marks on the smooth surface are all visible.
Caviar, grained calfskin, is much more durable: the grain hides micro-scratches and holds its shape better over time. For everyday use, it is the more practical choice.
In the second-hand market, this difference weighs twice as much: caviar more often arrives in better condition for the same age, and it is also more in demand precisely because of this.
The format
The same line exists in multiple sizes, and they are not valued in the same way. Larger formats have more exposed surface area and therefore more points where wear accumulates, but they are also the ones preferred by those looking for a bag to actually use. Smaller formats stand the test of time better because they are carried with fewer contents.
Hardware and chain
This is the point most often overlooked in photos. The chain rests on the shoulder and rubs against the leather: both the gilding, which can be worn in contact points, and the integrity of the links should be checked.
For the clasp, it is important that the mechanism clicks precisely. A slow clasp on a structured bag requires a laboratory repair.
What comes with the bag
Dust bag, box, card, and purchase receipt significantly affect the resale value. They don't change the bag itself, but they change how easy it is to resell later, and this is reflected in today's price.
What to check before buying
- Corners: on lambskin, these are the first points to show wear.
- Quilting: check that the relief is still full and that the diamonds or chevrons are not flattened at contact points.
- Interior: the leather or fabric lining should be checked in photos, not taken for granted.
- Shape: a structured bag that has lost its structure cannot regain it.
On value predictions
It is often said that certain bags are an investment. This is an interpretation of the past, not a guarantee for the future: the luxury second-hand market depends on demand, availability, and brand choices, none of which are predictable. A bag is bought because one wants to use it.
